Historically, the barrier to entry to creating a Network Operating System has been high due to the magnitude and complexity of the functional requirements for both hardware and software. Hardware is only as useful as the software that runs on it. We need an open and flexible operating system to take full advantage of open platforms, such as white box routers and switches.

AT&T has made no secret about our move to white box hardware as a critical component of our network.

ONAP is well on its way to being accepted as the global industry platform for SDN and NFV, with members representing more than 55% of global mobile subscribers.

But each individual device in the network needs its own operating system. Open Architecture for a Disaggregated Network Operating System (dNOS) will help foster an ecosystem of application and hardware options from multiple vendors.
