The desire to simplify network operations in complex multi-layer transport networks is driving commoditization of equipment along with intelligent software tools to control, configure and observe such networks. This so-called disaggregation of both packet and optical networks is a major source of innovation in transport networks. We introduce the newly launched ODTN project (short for Open and Disaggregated Transport Networks), an industry-wide initiative to build an open source reference platform and deliver production-ready solutions using an innovative supply chain model.
