The multi-access edge cloud -- able to support multiple access technologies and host third-party tenants -- has significant potential for enabling a new generation of cloud applications that benefit from an edge presence. The challenge, however, is how to operationalize such a system, stressing the state-of-the-art in building, configuring, deploying, operating, provisioning, and upgrading potentially hundreds or thousands of edge sites. This talk frames the problem in general terms, taking into account the perspective of several stakeholders: service developers, system integrators, platform architects, and network operators. It also walks through the approach taken to deploy CORD as a multi-access edge platform, and highlights the lessons learned in that process.
