LFN Dev Forum: Building Cloud Native, Web Scale, Deployable VNFs with Service Mesh Architecture
In the Cloud Native communities, 2018 is turning out to be the Year of Service Mesh. In this talk, we will introduce to the audience of What's and Why's of the mirco-service architecture based on a Service Mesh, the competing open source options of Service Mesh (e.g. Istio / Envoy, Conduit, NginMesh ...), and the challenges we need to solve to implement a service mesh based micro-service architecture for CSPs, e.g. container networking choices, supporting stateful VNFs, service policy interfaces etc. We will weave in some of the ongoing work in the OPNFV Clover project addressing these challenges along the way, but the content is broadly applicable to anyone interested in learning about how to build web scale, deployable, cloud native network services with a service mesh architecture. This will be equally applicable to developers and operators.

LFN Dev Forum: Collaboration Between Open Source(ONAP) and SDO for SDN/NFV Modeling/API
The coordination between standard and open source become more imperative when ONAP would like to support more commercial use case, different SDOs and forum have a different model for key artifacts such as service, resources. The danger is that when API is built, different SDO, Forum, and ONAP will not be able to interoperable. For NFV, some vendors have already implemented the product reference on ETSI NFV/OASIS TOSCA standard, for inter-operator interworking, MEF also proposed interlude interface. TMF API has been widely used, ONF TAPI has been integrated into MEF core and resource models. This panel will discuss how open source and standard would work better to get alignment to avoid the fragmentation of the industry.

LFN Dev Forum: Managing State in Cloud Native VNFs
The classic advice for cloud native application development is to avoid stateful components. However, most Telco applications include multiple types of stateful data - events, telemetry, call records, customer data, application session state, and more. This presentation will cover common cloud native data design patterns which allow developers and operators to scale applications and provide resiliency for important data. Attendees will learn about common data patterns including sharding and master/slave replication, the many ways to cache data to improve performance and scalability, and modern storage back-ends which are tolerant to failure.

LFN Dev Forum: Building Container-Based NFV Solutions With VPP Integration and ONAP Orchestration
Containers are becoming popular choices for NFV solutions due to the benefits provided: easier to deploy, better scalability and lower overhead. Kubernetes has become another choice for Virtual Infrastructure Manager (VIM) in NFV deployment. Some key challenges still need to be addressed for container-based NFV solutions, e.g., requirements of high performance container networking solutions and ease of orchestration and management of VNFs, which are pain points for many server providers to deploy container-based NFV solutions.
This presentation will show a reference design of container-based VNFs with integration of Vector Packet Processing (VPP) from FD.io and ONAP orchestration on Arm NFV infrastructure. We are building this Arm-based solution in OPNFV Container4NFV and Auto projects. Kubernetes is used as VIM to deploy Docker cluster for OPNFV platform. ONAP key components like APP-C, DCAE, SDN-C are deployed on this OPNFV platform for Edge Cloud, Resiliency, and Enterprise vCPE use cases. The VPP vhost-user interfaces are used to create L2 bridge and VxLAN overlay to connect between containers, which can be on the same host or different hosts. Two local cloud stacks (OpenStack, and cloud-native) are used in combination to represent one type of "hybrid cloud" environment.

LFN Dev Forum: NFV and DevOps Networking Needs in Kubernetes: A Unifying Vision
Kubernetes has done a brilliant job of expressing its network API in a manner which meets precisely the needs of Enterprise DevOps app developers.  NFV traditionally views itself as having very different needs.  The perception that difference in NFV needs have impeded progress on getting them met, out of concern that either they would damage the DevOps user experience, or lead to a fork in the network stack in which 'normal' Kubernetes Networking and NFV Kubernetes Networking would be served by distinct and subtly incompatible stacks.

This talk attempts to bridge that gap by unifying conceptually the DevOps KubernetesNetworking needs and the NFV Kubernetes Networking needs in a language that clearly expresses them as very very close to each other, in the hopes of making it easier to get everyone's needs met.

FD.io Mini Summit: Empowering Container-based NFV infrastructure with VPP
The presentation will show a reference design of containerized VNFs with VPP integration on Arm-based NFV infrastructure. Kubernetes is used as VIM to deploy Docker cluster for OPNFV platform. DPDK is used to accelerate containerized VNFs, meanwhile, the VPP vhost-user interfaces are used to create L2 bridge and VxLAN overlay to connect between containers, which can be on the same host or different hosts. The design ensures high throughput performance for VNFs, as well as provides high scalability. This presentation will be useful for audience who want to understand the progress of NFV on Arm and who have plan to deploy their containerized NFV solutions on Arm architecture.

FD.io Mini Summit: Accelerated Open Source vBRAS Solution Based on OpenBRAS and VPP/DPDK
BRAS is used to authenticate, authorize and route broadband subscriber data traffic according to customized policies. Traditionally BRAS equipment is expensive and implemented with dedicated silicon platform, which is often vendor-locked. The presentation will show virtualized BRAS(vBRAS) solution that runs on COTS. It includes below key elements: 1) A solution framework with separated Control Plane and Data Plane. Control Plane leverages OpenBRAS, an open source project initiated by China Telecom, and Data Plane leverages VPP and DPDK. 2) An advanced flow steering technique to distribute PPPoE packets on a standard NIC to multiple queues, hence handled by multiple cores evenly. 3) ACL and rate limiting is used for uplink flows and Hierarchical QoS(HQoS) for downlink flows.

Akraino Breakout: Meet-and-Greet Akraino
The Linux Foundation recently launched a new open source project called Akraino Edge Stack, based off of code from AT&T that’s intended to create a fully integrated open source software stack supporting high-availability cloud services optimized for edge computing systems and applications.
Unlike other open source-based integration projects, Akraino Edge Stack exclusively focuses on everything about the edge.

The platform integrates multiple open source projects and introduces new components to supply a holistic set of Edge platform, application building blocks, and APIs. Akraino Edge Stack is complementary to existing open source projects and standards such as OpenStack, ONAP, Kubernetes, Ceph, Acumos AI, and
EdgeX Foundry, among others, and interfaces with these adjacent projects to develop fully-integrated edge solutions.

The Akraino Edge Stack community will bridge gaps in the current technology, upstream enhancements to existing projects, and host innovative edge projects within the platform.
Come and Join us for this meet-and-greet session on Akraino.
Anyone interested in the Edge Computing is welcome to join.

OpenDaylight Project Breakout: Introduction and Demo of the Infrautils. Metrics API and Its Implementations, Incl. Support for Prometheus.io From the CNCF
The ODL infrautils project proposes a new API to expose metrics from ODL SDN applications. This API is currently in the process of being adopted accross the genius and netvirt projects, and could be of interest and used by other ODL projects as well. The infrautils.metrics API currently already has 2 implementations available (and more could be written). The first one uses a built-in Codehale's Dropwizard Metrics library and exposes metrics via JMX and can dump metrics to local files at regular intervals. The second one offers up metrics over HTTP to an external https://prometheus.io metrics server scraping from ODL, and can do all sorts of interesting things... (Prometheus is one of the projects of the Cloud Native Computing Foundation https://www.cncf.io.). A 3rd implementation supporting OpenStack Ceilometer from contributors would be interesting.

FD.io Mini Summit: Empower diverse Open Transport Layer Protocol in the Cloud Networking
With the development of cloud network infrastructure, the network stack needs to be re-invented to meet the highly diversified and ultimate QoS/SLA requirements from the next generation Internet applications. There are some challenges as the following:- Legacy TCP is best effort based, no performance guarantee.- One-size-fits-all protocol or algorithm becomes less feasible.- Complicated and heterogeneous network environments makes common optimization less possible.- Growing concern on security on any given protocol.Huawei designed a new open source protocol development kit - DMM(Dual-domain,Multi-protocol, Multi-instance), which provides an extendable transport protocol framework and runtime library, enables application-transparent and dynamic protocol engagement and adaption. Now, Huawei wants to contribute DMM to the FD.IO Community to accelerate traffic transportation together.
